April 2026 Art Recap

I thought I hadn’t done much in April, but it turns out that I was pretty busy! So many different things were happening.

Tiny Painting

I continued with my tiny paintings on 6.5×6.5cm paper using my tiny watercolour palette. So much fun! These days I always have six pieces of paper taped down to have everything ready to go.

I also abandoned last month’s plan to only display the 9 best images at a time. I mean, how can I even decide that? Instead I found a bigger piece of wood to just display everything:

Some detail shots of the sketches I did this month:

Watercolour

I didn’t abandon other sizes of watercolour, though. In fact, I bought a 12x12cm sketchbook with good paper to replace the one I tried last month. I just don’t see the point of using bad paper and not enjoying yourself! And this one is so much more fun. Also, look at all the paint tubes I have now amassed. Whoops!

The highlight though was the birthday card I made. I taped off half of a page of A4, so that the card can be folded afterwards.

And a few images in the new sketchbook:

Gouache

But that’s not all. Of course not. 🫠 While watercolour is great I did get curious and wanted to try gouache. It’s similar, but it’s actually opaque, so you can do different things with it. I am still not entirely sure how I want my gouache painting to look, but they definitely should look different from watercolour. Otherwise, why did I spend the money?

So, yeah. I ended up buying a small set and converted a mint tin into my new palette:

I also bought some nicer brushes to go with it. I use those with watercolour now, too. Good brushes make such a difference! The two on the left were freebies, but I use those regularly, too.

And of course I couldn’t resist and after a few tries I did have to add another colour (warm blue) and a dedicated notebook. I figured that with gouache being opaque, coloured paper would be fun.

So, now my full setup for gouache looks like this:

And here are the paintings I did. First in my watercolour sketchbook and then in the new one. I still need to learn a lot and figure out how I want to use that medium. But it’s a fun exploration.

  1. @urbanhafner.com Those little pictures look like lovely paintings on beer coasters. I think this is a really amazing work where you really can feel the joy in it.

    1. Thank you! I love doing these tiny paintings also because they’re so quick to do. Or at least they feel faster to do so there’s less of a mental barrier to get started.

      1. @urbanhafner.com A good strategy to overcome mental obstacles. You're gaining results faster and the small format of the paintings is really special and appealing. You can put it in places where a huge painting would not fit in.

    1. Thank you! I enjoy how watercolour (and to some extend also gouache) let’s you be super loose and just do a few strokes and there’s something. I already struggle with gouache and how that somehow feels too realistic to me. Unsure how to describe it. 🫠
